Agent Zero

Agent Zero is an open-source agent framework. Its defining property for our purposes is that the standard installation runs the whole framework inside a Docker container, so the agent's own work happens in a contained filesystem rather than loose on your host.

Owners Club currently recommends Agent Zero for agentic workflows because Docker containment is the standard install, not an optional hardening step.

Containment The framework runs in the container; the Web UI is reached from your browser

Why we recommend it

  • Containment is the default. Container-first design means an agent that writes files, runs commands, and installs packages does so inside an image you can throw away.
  • It is genuinely general-purpose. The framework is not tied to one vendor's model API; you configure the LLM it uses.
  • MIT licence, so you can read, fork, and adapt it.

The containment argument is spelled out in Agent containment.

Install and first run

Docker CLI, minimal form:

docker run -p 80:80 -v a0_usr:/a0/usr agent0ai/agent-zero

Let the host port be chosen automatically by mapping to port 0 instead:

docker run -p 0:80 -v /path/to/your/work_dir:/a0/usr agent0ai/agent-zero

There is also an installer that walks through the same setup:

curl -fsSL https://bash.agent-zero.ai | bash -s -- --quick-start --name agent-zero --port 5080

From Docker Desktop's GUI the equivalent is: pull agent0ai/agent-zero:latest, then run it with a host port mapped to container port 80 and a volume at /a0/usr. The Web UI is then at http://localhost:<PORT>. Full steps live in the official installation doc.

Configuration worth knowing

  • Volume mapping matters. /a0/usr is where the agent's persistent state lives. Map it to a named volume or a host directory; without it, a recreated container starts from scratch.
  • Port mapping is host-to-container. The container always listens on 80 internally; you choose the host side (8080:80, 50080:80, or 0:80 for automatic assignment).
  • Model choice and context window. Set the total context window first (for example 100k), then tune the chat-history fraction of it. A huge history fraction on a huge window is still huge.

Common pitfalls

  • localhost inside the container is not your host. This is the number one local-AI networking bug. If your model server (Unsloth, Jan, Ollama, llama.cpp) runs on the host, the container cannot reach it at 127.0.0.1. Use http://host.docker.internal:<port> where available, or the Docker bridge gateway such as http://172.17.0.1:<port> on Linux.
  • A model server bound to loopback is still unreachable. Even with the right gateway address, the server must listen on a Docker-reachable interface such as 0.0.0.0. Bind it deliberately and keep the port limited to trusted clients.
  • macOS Docker socket. Agent Zero's docs call out enabling “Allow the default Docker socket to be used” in Docker Desktop settings on macOS.
  • Upgrading in place. The documented migration path runs the new version on a different host port with a new volume name so the old instance stays usable. Overwriting the only working install before verifying the new one is avoidable pain.

Tips and tricks

  • Give the agent a disposable work directory first. Containment is the feature — do not start by mounting your whole home folder.
  • Keep the model local for privacy-sensitive work: point Agent Zero at your Unsloth Desktop or Jan endpoint instead of a cloud provider.
  • Treat the mapped volume as data, not as a backup. If the agent produces something you care about, copy it out.
