Docker Desktop

Docker Desktop is the packaged desktop container runtime for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It bundles the Docker engine, CLI, Compose, and a GUI, and it is the runtime that most of our local-first recommendations assume is already installed.

OSS? No — the desktop application is proprietary. The engine underneath (Moby) is Apache-2.0
Desktop licence Docker Subscription Service Agreement
Free for Personal use, education, non-commercial open source, and small businesses with fewer than 250 employees AND under $10M annual revenue
Platforms macOS (Apple Silicon / Intel), Windows, Linux
Prerequisites Windows: WSL2 or Hyper-V; macOS/Linux: 64-bit host with virtualisation support
GUI Yes

Why it is on our list

  • It is the least-friction way to get a container runtime, especially on macOS and Windows where containers need a managed Linux VM.
  • Most local AI tooling assumes it. Agent Zero's documented beginner path is Docker Desktop; dev containers, Compose files, and container-based agents all expect a working Docker socket.
  • The GUI teaches the CLI. Seeing images, containers, ports, and volumes as objects is how most people finally understand the command line.

Install and first run

  1. Download from https://www.docker.com/products/docker-desktop/.
  2. Install and launch. On Windows, accept the WSL2 backend; on macOS, choose Apple Silicon or Intel to match your machine.
  3. Confirm it works:
docker run --rm hello-world

Licensing: read this before rolling it out at work

This is the one app on our list where the licence, not the technology, is the decisive factor.

  • Free: personal use, education, non-commercial open source projects, and small businesses under the employee and revenue thresholds above.
  • Larger or commercial use requires a paid subscription per developer.
  • The engine (Moby) is Apache-2.0 and can be used without Docker Desktop — which is exactly why Podman and Docker Engine on Linux are legitimate escape hatches.

Common pitfalls

  • Assuming "Docker is open source" covers Docker Desktop. It does not. The desktop app is a commercial product with a free tier.
  • WSL2 memory pressure on Windows. The WSL VM grows and does not always shrink. If your machine starts swapping after a few containers, cap the WSL memory in .wslconfig.
  • File-sharing performance on macOS. Bind-mounting large directories (model weights, datasets) across the VM boundary is slow. Keep model files on the host and pass them by volume selectively.
  • Port collisions. Two containers mapping the same host port is a silent-startup-failure classic. Map to 0 to let Docker pick a free port while you experiment.
  • Running Docker Desktop and a Podman machine at the same time and then being surprised when a tool connects to the wrong socket.

Tips and tricks

  • Use --rm for one-off experiments so you do not accumulate dead containers.
  • Named volumes (-v name:/path) are the least surprising way to persist agent state; host bind mounts are for files you actively want to edit.
  • When a container starts and immediately exits, read the logs (docker logs <id>) before touching configuration — the answer is usually there.
