Choosing local AI tools
Most "which local AI app?" debates are really arguments about different goals. Start with what you want to accomplish, then let the goal pick the tool.
Start with the goal
| Your goal | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| "I want ChatGPT, but private" | Unsloth Desktop or Jan | Desktop chat over local models, no account, no cloud |
| "I want an agent that does tasks" | Agent Zero | Container-first by default |
| "I want a terminal agent on my own model" | Hermes Agent | Provider-agnostic, local endpoints supported |
| "I want to generate images or video" | ComfyUI | The serious node-graph engine |
| "I want to fine-tune a model" | Unsloth Desktop | No-code LoRA and full fine-tuning |
| "I want to publish a site from Markdown" | Wiki3 App | Local + remote + site URL in one dashboard |
| "I just need containers" | Docker Desktop then Podman | Friction vs licence freedom |
Three questions that decide most cases
- Do you need tool use or just conversation? Chat apps stop at text. Agents read files, run commands, and take actions — and therefore need containment. See Agent containment.
- Is the licence part of the requirement? If you work at a company above Docker's free-tier thresholds, Docker Desktop is a paid product. Podman is Apache-2.0 outright. This is a business decision, not a technical one.
- Does your hardware fit the smallest useful model? Every tool here is limited by VRAM/RAM. Choose a tool whose model catalogue has quantizations that actually fit, then scale.
Honest comparisons
Unsloth Desktop vs Jan. Both give you a desktop chat over local GGUF models. Unsloth Desktop adds serving and training, and is our current recommendation; it is also in beta. Jan is more mature in positioning as a simple chat app and lighter to explain. If you want one app that grows into agents and fine-tuning, Unsloth Desktop. If you want the simplest possible chat window, Jan is fine.
Agent Zero vs Hermes Agent. Both are agents; the difference is the default posture. Agent Zero runs in a container as the standard install. Hermes Agent installs as a CLI and can run in a container, which is why we point at its devcontainer. If you will forget to contain it later, choose the tool that contains itself.
Docker Desktop vs Podman. Docker Desktop is smoother and proprietary with a free tier; Podman is fully open source and slightly rougher. See Choosing a container runtime.
ComfyUI vs everything else. ComfyUI is not a chat app with image support; it is a graph engine. If you want "make me a picture" from a chat window, Unsloth Desktop's diffusion support is the shorter path.
A reasonable first stack
For a single laptop belonging to someone who has never run a local model:
- Docker Desktop — you will need it eventually.
- Unsloth Desktop — prove local chat works on your hardware.
- Agent Zero — point it at that local model once chat is proven.
That order front-loads the two failure modes people hit: no working container runtime, and a model too large for the machine.
